Somewhere in La-La-Land
"Kite?" said a voice into the blackness quiet. Another vioce groaned and breathed heavily
"Where am I?"
"Who's here?" spoke the first voice. Seemed like there were only two people there in the dark. It was a very cold dark and damp place and as they will soon find out , with sharp rocks too.
"Aaaaaye!" said the second voice
"Hold on!" said the first voice and suddenly a small light was sparked "I always knew this ligher would help me one day... Are you all right?"
"Yea. just cut my hand, its not too bad" said the person in obvious painful voice "careful with the stones here... they are very sharp" . While looking for a way out, the little light from the lighter revealed writing on the walls
"A musical cave eh?"
"Why do you say that?"
"Looks like guitar tabs to me"
"You are right... and look! There are music notes all over the place. Someone must have been here"
"Or they still are" with that remark the search for the exit resumed and after quite some time they found a moveable rock which took a lot of effort to move. Outside, they stood behind a vast sheet of roaring water. Walking carefully around the edge they found a not too far spot from the amazing sound of the waterfall
"Where's Albert, Ki-- hang on! you are not Kite!"
"No I'm not. I'm his postman though" he offered his non bloody hand
"I'm... I'm Lana" she shook his hand and tried to figure out what was happening, "Your hand, I dont have anything on me that can help, but you can always wash it in the waterfall. Nature's healing touch...." she gave him a weak smile
"If only I could stop the blood" he said and walked towards the waterfall but when he came back his hand was much the same. At that moment Lana un-pony-tailed her hair and ripped her hair tie and tied it around the postman's cut
"ah, that’s quite clever. Thank you. Only a woman could have thought of that "
"You are British then" she figured out
"Haha, yes I am. "
"Is it stil sore?"
"Just a bit. But dont worry, its just a flesh wound" . That made both of them chuckle
"Oh, you british and your sense of humour..... by the way, how did you know we are talking of the same Kite?"
"Oh well, there's only one Kite, isnt there?" and he gave her a wink
"Yes, i suppose there is...." she smiled at the thought of Kite but then her smile faded as she realized she might not see him and Albert ever again. She was in somewhere with someone and there was nothing around that offered clued that could take her back home.
"I'm hungry" declared the postman
"Huh?" Lana's train of thoughts was derailed, as it were.
"I said I'm hungry . Are you?"
"Well, now that you mention it...." There was silence until Lana asked what could they eat
"I see a fruit tree" and indeed the postman pointed to a big tree with all sorts of fruits on it. Quite a sight really. And so they got closer, There was a name tag on the tree which looked like hyrogliphics
"It says "Fame"" said Lana
"How'd ya know tha'?"
"It's cyrilic"
"You russian then?"
"I am"
"Funny, I could 'ave sworn you was american" said the postman and reached for an apple but Lana stopped him
"Dont! what if its like the forbidden fruit?" Lana remembered the bible story
"No, my dear girl, Adam and Eve were dressed a bit differently than how we are" and he took a bite of the apple "besides, do you see a snake?"
"Yes" and funnily enough there was snake [who didnt look very real as it looked like it was made out of paper] curled around a branch. The postman slowly put the apple down on the ground
"I didnt pick it... it fell off" he explained to the snake and gave a nervous laugh
"I am the snake-nake-nake-nake-nake of Zandman Man-an-an-an-an of Dreams-eams-eams-eams"
"Eh? What do you want!" asked the postman all bewildered
"Food"
"Well you have this tree dont you?" reasoned the postman and then added under his breath "my word, im talking to a snake!"
"I want something more substantial! I been on fruit diet since I can remember! Now if I could get some meat...." At that moment the postman noticed that Lana was getting nearer and nearer to the snake and he realized that snake must be hypnotizing her. Postie grabbed her by the arm and ran as fast as he could from tree dragging Lana behind him.
"Wow you are quick" remarked Lana trying to get some sense of what just happened
"Yes, well when I started as a postman , at the times when bicycles were not popular [in England at least] for post delivery, and it would get very cold in the early mornings, especially in the winter....." He tailed off the sentance. Lana didnt get a word of what he just said but she back to herself
"Gosh I am so light headed...." said Lana in a sleepy voice
"Have you ever met Harry?"
"Harry?"
"Yea, Kite's Harry-"
"I wouldnt say so...."
"Eh? No, not hairy, Harry!"
"Oh oops, I'm sorry" said Lana blushing a bit and stifling a laugh "I did meet him, the scottish one?"
"Is he scottish? Since when! But anyway, I hear that he can hypnotize"
"Yes, Kite told me too... "
"The snake hypnotized you, thats why I remembered Harry" Postie answered Lana's un-questioned-yet question
"Thank you for that... " she said and sat on the grass.
"That still didnt solve the problem of food"
"Why dont we take a nap and then look for food?" said Lana in a small sleepy voice and closed her eyes
"What! No! Get up lady!" he shook her "I'm not sleeping here on the grass under the open sky in this land of I-Dont-Know!"
"What do you suggest then?" Lana yawned
"back to the cave?"
"Sure, but leave the door open... I dont like the dark" she yawned again. And off they went.
When they entered the cave , Lana found a comfortable spot to sleep, she wished the postman a good night to which the postman grumbled. He tried to sleep too, but couldn't... not on an empty stomach. But where could he go to get food? The fruit tree was out of the question , and besides he couldn't go looking for food and leave Lana alone in a cave. From frustration he picked up a stone and threw it. There was a sound, but not of a falling rock... it sounded like a squeak.
"I knew there was someone here!" Postie said in a loud whisper. At that moment a great red light sparked the cave and got closer and closer to the postman
"Stop it! stop it! My eyes! my eyes!" the postman shouted sheltering his eyes from the great burning light
"Who is your master?" a loud deep voice said
"Get that light away from my eyes!" And the light went dimmer "Thank you... who am I talking to?"
"You know Aye?"
"You what? Look, what dont you show yourself?"
"I am here... if you only look down..." . The postman did look down but saw nothing. He looked around him and then felt around him. There was only rocks... but then his hand came upon a soft small body. He picked it up and held it infront of him.
"What.... I mean... who are you?"
"I am Bog" said the little bear-dog looking creature and fixed his red scarf
"Bog?"
"I am the Bog of all the Bogs"
"Well, nice to meet you Bog... " it was the only thing that came to the postman's head and he now really wished Lana would wake up and help him figure out whats happening. He then realized that his cut on his hand was healed...
"I am sorry I hurt you before with the light.... but I heard you said "Aye" twice and he is our great enemy... he killed my master, and I have a mission now to kill him" said Bog and lowered his face
"You are not the only one" came Lana's voice
"Oh good morning to you! had a nice sleep?" the postman said in a rather sarcastic voice. Lana gave him a look that said something along the lines of this-is-not-the-time
"Albert knows him..."
"Who is Albert?" asked Bog
"He is a... an astral traveller" Lana said carefully not sure if Bog was familiar with the term
"So they exist?" Bog said and his face lit up and made him smile
"They do" assured him Lana. Bog jumped from postie's hands onto Lana and nuzzled her cheek which made Lana giggle
"Thank you good-news-bearer! Thank you!" and he kept on repeating this
"I dont want to appear rude, but why dont we find something to eat, and you could all explain to me what is going on" offered the postman whose stomach was making noises.
Bog led them to his hide and he gave them funny looking food.
"I hope it dont come from the bog" said the postman with a disgusted look on his face
"dont be mean.... " Lana told him "it smells not too bad...."
"but it looks awful!" moaned the postman
"The stomach can't see. Now eat it" None of them ate the food, they just looked from the food to one another
"Well ladies first" remind her the postman with a sly smile
"Fine" said Lana and ate the worm-sandwich looking food. She swallowed it. "Mmm! Its not bad at all! tastes like chicken"
"Everything tastes like chicken these days... And you Americans must be eating McDonalds everyday"
"You really are the most annoying person I ever met"
"You are not an angel either!" said the postman and faced away from her. After they finished eating, Bog told them that it was his first time cooking and when Lana said it was delicious he blushed.
"So why is Aye your enemy?" Lana asked, getting straight to business
"We... the bogs... we are a clan of a race. There were many of us once, but after the great war... many died... " Bog stopped talking for a minute and wiped a tear from his eye. Lana took him in her hand and stroked him and he kept talking, "Everyone thought the Bog race was gone... they thought we all died... but some of us lived... and long time after our dormant period the "woof" was heard and we came to our old meeting place and we lived again" he stopped again and sighed, and when neither Lana nor the postman spoke , he continued "we were different. We found that we have some specials powers.... Like, very long life, our bodies are resistant to poison, we can live under water.... but we cannot walk the sky... That is my dream... to walk the sky" he smiled at the thought.
"My dream is to get out of here...." said the postman quietly but Lana heard him and punched him in the ribs
"Aye!" exclaimed the postman and rubbed his side
"You said it again!" Bog shot up from his sitting position
"I didnt mean your fellow, thats the way I... I...."
"You said it again!" interrupted Bog
"... the way... that your humble servant... exclaims..." said the postman thinking to himself "I never thought learning Shakespeare in school would come in useful one day"
"He didnt mean to say your enemy's name... but go on with your story, Bog" Lana said and Bog resumed his sitting position and went on
"So we were changed.... and we found out that to live again, we must change. That is our life, go to dormant periods in which we externally sleep, but internally we change, we change to live again"
"Clearly Jon Anderson knew of this...." remarked the postman. Bog and Lana simply looked at him "I never was much of a fan...."
"When we change, after a dormant period, we acquire new powers.... we are free spirits, we do not use our powers for the evil... But if we fall into evil hands...." he let the sentence tail off....
"Is that what Aye is trying to do then?"Lana asked carefully
"My master duelled with Aye... and he ... he.... " at that moment Bog burst into a fountain of tears. "I never understood why! All my life, i never... never..." he said through a tearful voice.... Lana cuddled him to her face and kissed lightly his cheek [the postman was shocked]
"Your master was old and weak... he would have gone to his dormant period soon, and Aye wanted to have a Bog with better powers and for a longer time. He tortured him to tell him where the other bogs are... but your master gave all his strength to put an invisible shield on all of you that were left so that Aye will never found you... your master had a small bit of power left in him, and he struggled to stand up.... Aye struck him down dead" Lana said in a sad voice through closed eyes, as if she saw the scene
"How do you know all of this?" Bog asked in a small voice
"Your lifetime of questions, were the tears on your cheek... I tasted the answers...." Lana said and hugged Bog "I will help you Bog with anything I can"
"Thank you.. thank you.. thank you..." he repeated until he fell asleep
"Gee, you know, I stil can't believe whats going on..." said the postman quietly to Lana "we found ourselves in a cave, we talk to a snake, we find some bear-dog looking thing, he tells us his story of some Aye person.... I dont get none of it at all" said the postman who sounded frustrated
"I dont get much of it either... but I do know Aye is a horrible person" Lana answered and remembered what he did to Albert a while back, "but... I want to help Bog, postie". She called me postie! the postman said to himslef.
"Can I ummm..... " his mouth moved but no words came out
"Can you what?" Lana asked
"I think I need to apologize for being..... well.... "
"mean?" offered Lana
"Well.... i suppose... ummm... You see when I am... ummmm... I get...."
"When you are scared you get all defensive and mean because you dont have any answers as to what is going on?" Lana offered again
"My! Are you a psychologist?"
"No" she laughed "by the way, i want to apologize for punching you"
"you call that a punch! You are a weak lass you"
"You are so mean" she said and they both laughed.
"Listen!" the postman said suddenly as he heard footsteps. From the distance they could hear someone shouting the words "It is here! it is here!" . The postman, Lana and Bog ran towards the sound. They saw a small man with while curly hair and when he saw them he began shouting
"would you awfully mind to stop shouting...." asked the postman all politely.
"What are you doing here? Who are you?" asked the white haired man in a thick scottish accent
"Hey he is scottish!" exclaimed Lana
"What is here.... ummm.... sir?" asked the postman
"I have been searching for this place for many a day now and the opening I have found it at last! It is here!" the man said and performed his dance of joy. Postie and Lana simply stared
"Searching.... why?" Lana asked
"Aye my dear lass, I am an old man, and an old man like me spends his last days in his garden.... one day I was in me garden as usual, and i see a glimmering thing in the distance... it was shining so brightly so I went inside and got me sunnies"
"Indeed, thats a clever thing to do" said the postman in a matter-of-a-fact way
"Indeed it is Lad. My old eyes, would have been hurt other wise...."
"And you are wearing those sunnies of yours since then?" Lana asked noticing he was wearing sunglasses
"Aye, lass. I got closer to the shining thing and I passed my hand over it. I could feel there was writng on it but I couldnt read it. So I took my sunnies off and the light shine into my eyes , blinding me forever.... " He said and lowered his head
"Do you take them off?" Postie asked
"Aye" said the scot and he took them off slowly.... A pair of red eyes were looking at Lana, postie and Bog and then the cave started to shake
"Someone do something!" Lana screamed while trying not to get hit by the falling rocks
"Put them back on!" shouted the postman but the Scott didnt do so. "Do something Bog! you are supposed to have power and all that!" the postman shouted
Bog stood then on his two back legs and a great blue light shone from his chest. The red light from the scott and the blue light from Bog were advancing one another until the coincided and splashed out, shot upwards and the red light slowly diminished [as did the senses of fear of the postman and Lana]. Bog lay breathless on the stone floor and the scott was sitting on a rock with a hand on his heart
"Give a little bit of time to me.... I am an old man... I have a weak heart" said the Scot between intakes of breath. When everyone was back to normal, the Scot cheerfully said
"To answer your question, my dear lad, no i dont" and he smiled.
"We can see why" said Lana "but at least the opening got bigger" Lana pointed upwards.
"Clever lass" said the scot and winked
"What was the shining thing anyhow?" Asked the postman, trying to get the conversation back to business
"Pardon?" said the absent-minded Scotsman absent-mindedly like
"The shinning..." reminded him the postman
"Oh that is a wonderful movie! Great book as well. Loved the part when--"
"Don't spoil it for me , I havent watched it ye!" exclaimed Lana
"Havent you? but its such an old movie! I thought everyone watched it by now" pointed out the postman
"Well they are making a remake now, and I never did get round to read it"
"They are making a remake?" asked the postman
"Dont forget that I am from the future" said Lana with a smile
"I never knew... you never mentioned that!"
"Well, I am... you see thats how Albert found me. He set the time machine to the future, and got to 2023 and he found me" explained Lana.
"..... " was the answer of the postman
"It is confusing... some would say its not even possible... but there you go"
"Did you mention the words "time" and "machine"?" suddenly asked the Scotsman looking all suspicious
"I did.. What of it?" Lana asked cautiously.
"Will you be not talking of that time traveller Albert and his friend ... the funny name one... what was it... Kite?"
"You know them! How!" Lana and postie exclaimed
"From my dear friend Harry!"
"Harry!" Lana and postie said in unison
"Are you also a grave digger then?" asked the postman
"Aye, I was. But the ruddy council didnt like me digging in me kilt. I told them I said I am a proud Scotsman and they told me to shovel off."
"A reunion is always a nice occasion...." came in Bog's voice "but what was the shining thing?"
"Ah yes... I have it here" said the Scotsman and produce a slab of something shiny
"It says...
At the time of talks of war
You will wander the land and find the door
Look up you will meet a few
And a messenger they will give to you
Exist through the stone door
You will find whom you knew before
He will come to you, the traveller holding a kite
Tell him your message on the 23rd nigh
The End Is Near"
When the postman finished reading it out loud, everyone was quite and tried to figure out what it all means.
"Looks like a prophecy to me" said Lana
"Aye lass, and its been right so far. Except for...." All eyes turned to the Scotsman
"Except for, today there was no sound of barking dogs. There was sound of barking dogs everytime I came here, but not today...."
"That was me" owned up Bog "I knew you were here, but I didnt know what are you doing here, and who are you... so i tried to scare you" he blushed a bit
"Scare me! A proud Scotsman we didnt fear that ruddy King!"
"Witch King?" whispered the postman to Lana
"No I believe he is talking about King Charles....?" Lana whispered back "before you say it, I love studying history and I teach it" she completed his un-questioned question
"Got it"
"So what now? How will the help us find Aye?" Bog asked
"We need to find Albert. He is the only one who can help" reasoned Lana
"How do we find him?" asked the postman
"Can you teleport , bog?" asked Lana with a hope that he can
"I can"
"Excellent!"
"but..."
"yes?"
"I dont have enough power to teleport everyone... I can teleport one of you , I am not sure if I can do another". Bog must have lost strength when he produced that blue light, thought Lana. And then her face expression changed
"My God!"
"What!" they all looked at her
"The prophecy.... it is right!". The Scotsman grabbed it and read out loud again
"You mean...?" began the postman , realizing that the group is going to split up. Lana nodded
"You and ...." she pointed at the Scotsman
"Billy. My name is Billy Shears it has been for so many years" he offered her his hand to shake.
"Well you and Billy can go up the opening and find Albert and Kite and tell them Bog's story "
"On the 23rd night no doubt" chuckled the postman
"This is not a joke, postie" Lana said in a warning voice
"No it isnt. But I learnt from a good friend that laughter and smile helps you in life"
"I always liked the British sense of humour" Lana said with a smile "you are coming with me Bog" she turned to Bog and picked him up
"So this is it... We are taking the long way home" said the postman with a somewhat happy tone in his voice as he really wanted, or at least preferred to be somewhere he knows, then again, this kind of adventure is only done in a lifetime.
"Hang on, how do we know England is up there?" The Scotsman asked
"Dont worry Billy, we turn left at Greenland" said the postman and said "after you Bill" and they began the climb upwards
"Postie!" said Lana hesitantly
"Yes?"
"When you see Kite... " she searched for the right words "tell him I say HI" she smiled
"I will" he winked at her
"Good luck" she said as he climbed up and out of sight and then she turned to Bog "ready?" He nodded. Before teleporting from the direction of the opening they heard the voice of the Scotsman saying "I finally understood who you
are!" "What?!" was the postman's voice "You're Dave Gilmour!" "Keep climbing Billy" and a medley of Pink Floyd with a Scottish accent followed. Lana laughed.
"I think we can go now, Bog" and in a flash they were back in the future year of 2023 in a beautiful mension looking house.
"Bog come here." she told him and carried him to a white room in where she changed into spacesuit and gave Bog what seemed like a fish tank. "I want you to close your eyes and look at, I 'll be standing by your side.... alright?" Bog nodded. They entered Lana's old space ship and she turned it on flying high up to the sky....
"Open your eyes" she told Bog
"I am walking the skies! I am walking the skies!"
