More H.P.Lovecraft items in the ANYTHING (sub-board) section of this site. [shadow=black,left,300]Kolchak: The Night Stalker "NIGHT of CTHULU"[/shadow] Carl Kolchak - Tony Vencenzo - Ron Updyke - Emily Cowles [glow=green,2,300]Chapter One: RETURN to MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY[/glow] Carl Kolchak, an experianced news reporter, was called back by telephone from his boss Tony Vincenzo, who was the Editor of the "Independent News Service", located in Chicago, Illinois. Tony informed Carl, that he wanted him to return to Miskatonic University, but it wasn't to cover more of the fantastic exhibition, but it was to get the scoop on a murder that happened there. Kolchak was about to leave for the airport in Massachusetts, but now he had to reluctantly go back to the University, and cover the murder story there.
He was there only yesterday, snapping photos of displayed relics that were found in Greenland by an expedition. He also interviewed the archeological team that brought back the items from an unknown ancient temple, that was hidden on top of a snowy mountain. The scientists told Carl, that this temple shouldn't have been there, "It was a mystery that was waiting to be discovered", Kolchak had said to them. The scientists didn't share Carl's optimism, they all seemed grim and almost unapproachable because of the find. But, it was just another dull article for Kolchak, who would write a column about it in his newspaper back in Chicago. With an extra paragraph finishing the story with a murder, Carl guessed that Vincenzo wanted a bit of spice to the article. But Kolchak would find out more than just a spicey story. At Miskatonic University, Kolchak met Professor Wesireal who taught occult studies at the college, and Detective Starbyst from the 13th precinct in Arkham, Massachusetts. The professor was in his late seventies, and looked like the actor Peter Cushing, he was wearing dark brown suit, and usually smiling. The detective resembled a middle-aged, burly football player with a thick dark grey mustache, and wearing a dark blue suit, he had a set of eyes that were intensely hawk-like. Detective Starbyst remembered Carl, they had run into each other in Dunwich, a few years back when Kolchak lived in Massachusetts, reporting for another newspaper. The detective had a vivid memory of Carl, he remembered Kolchak was pushy, a pest and unliked by Starbyst.
Professor Wesireal spoke to Carl First: "Ah, you're the reporter that was here yesterday, good to see you again, Carl. I wish it were under different circumstances."
Detective Starbyst said to Carl sternly: "Kolchak, I thought you left Massachusetts for good, after ruining the case I was working on. Did you know I almost lost my job because of your interference? And another thing, it wasn't a flying saucer, it was nothing but unexplained lights in the sky." He finished bitterly.
Carl was cool, but a tiny bit sarcastic to the Dectective: "Don't forget the four people who were abducted by the aliens." His small smile melted quickly by the the vicious stare of Starbyst.
Detective Starbyst spoke to Carl: "Just do your job Kolchak ,and get the hell out of Massachusetts." The detective walked away and stood next three officers who were discussing the bloodied body that layed on the floor earlier.
Kolchak interviewed Prof. Wesireal: "So tell me doc, just what exactly happened here?"
The Professor related that the body was found only a few hours after the exhibit was closed, by the librarian, Mrs Honey. She had returned to the room because she had left her car keys on a desk. Unfortunately, she also found the mangled dead body of Mrs. Samuels, who was a teacher, laying on the floor. Continuing, Prof. Wesireal said that nothing was taken from the exhibit, nor from the purse that was found that belonged to Mrs. Samuels. Kolchak wanted to speak to Mrs. Honey, but the Professor said she had already spoken to the police about the matter. Also, Mrs. Honey didn't want to talk to any one else, because she was too upset. However, Dr. Lovecraft saw the body as well, before the police had arrived, and he wouldn't mind talking about it. Kolchak thought that the only other person he could talk to about the condition of the body, was Dr. Lovecraft, he dared not ask Detective Starbyst about it.Kolchak set up an interview with Dr. Lovecraft to talk about the horrible incident, early the next morning. Carl's eyes studied Mr. Lovecraft's appearence, he was tall, thin, pale, wearing little round glasses, a magnificant suit and seemed quite young to be a doctor. Where as Kolchak's appearence was almost the opppsite of Dr. Lovecraft, Carl was average height, middle-aged, slightly bow-legged, a bit out of shape, wearing a wrinkled light blue and white striped suit, an old woven hat, a camera around his neck, and holding a tape recorder, with his finger on the record button.
Dr. Lovecraft spoke to Carl: "Please, take a seat, and I'll tell you about the mutilated remains of Mr. Samuels."
Kolchak spoke after sitting down: "I hope you don't mind me recording our conversation? It's part of my job to be sure the facts are straight. Carl said nicely."
Dr. Lovecraft sat back in his large leather chair, and nodded silently, he reached into a drawer, pulled out a file, and then placed the file folder in front of Kolchak. The doctor stared quietly at Carl, waiting for him to ask an obvious question.
Kolchak looked down at the file in front him and spoke: "What's this?"
Dr. Lovecraft said calmly: "It's you." Carl gently grabbed the file and flipped thought it. The folder contained a handful of newspaper clippings, all about the strange and bizarre stories that Carl had written. These were the articles Kolchak had written when he worked for a Massachusetts newspaper. Kolchak's mind raced with the memories of all seven of the original clippings, he remembered the supernatural beings he bravely stood toe-to-toe with. And thought of the lives he had saved, and he also remembered the "Alien Story", that was the last adventure that cost him his job. Plus it made Detective Starbyst who kept repeatedly running into Carl at these incidents an enemy. Kolchak looked at Dr. Lovecraft, who continued to stare at him.
The young Dr. Lovecraft spoke: "I know alot about you Mr. Kolchak, that's why I made sure I would speak to you about the murder of poor Miss Samuels. I too, want you to get the facts, straight."

[glow=green,2,300]Chapter Two: INTERVIEW with DR. LOVECRAFT[/glow] Inside the beautifully antique furnished office of Dr. Lovecraft, Carl Kolchak of the Independent Newspaper Service, was conducting an interview about a murder that happened at Miskatonic University. The young doctor showed Carl a folder full of news clippings about cases that were solved by Kolchak, and then told Carl, he needed to speak to him as well about the murder. Kolchak understood quickly that the doctor was serious about this murder and needed Carl's help.
The doctor spoke: "Mr. Kolchak, have you spoken to Detective Starbyst about Miss Samuels?"
Kolchak: "No, ah..he's rather busy and I don't want to bother him."
Dr. Lovecraft: "He doesn't like you, does he?"
Kolchak: "Well, let's just say Starbyst wants me to disappear, A.S.A.P."
Dr. Lovecraft: "Don't worry about the Detective Mr. Kolchak, I will tell you what you need to know about the murder. First of all, I didn't know Miss Samuels at all, I've rarely seen her at the university. As for myself, I usually KEEP to myself in my office, my library, my laboratory or in my artifact storage facillity. You see, my family donated many grants to Miskatonic, I own sixty-three percent of this university. I used to oversee everything that happens here, beginning four years ago, but for the last two years I've been busy with a find from Greenland. My handpicked group that I sent, returned with more relics then I'd hoped for, I was quite pleased with the incredible bounty that was brought back."
Kolchak interjected: "Your handpicked group of scientists didn't seem to happy about the temple on the mountain they discovered. Care to comment on that?"
Dr. Lovecraft replied: "Certainly, they're superstitious, I believe that they became that way, after discovering the mountain temple and what was inside it. Because at first, they didn't believe me that the temple had exsisted at all."
Kolchak: "I see, but what about Miss Samuels?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "She was murdered by someone who was looking for something that was brought back from Greenland, that wasn't on display at the exhibit."
Kolchak asked curiously: "What would be so important, that someone would kill for it?"
Dr. Lovecraft stood up and said: "Let's take a stroll to my storage facillity, Mr. Kolchak, and we'll talk about it."Carl the newspaper reporter, and the mysterious Dr. Lovecraft walked side by side each other on their way to the artifact storage facillity. Kolchak admired the dark cherry wooden walls and ceiling, such great detail is now seldom seen in the modern world of 1975. Carl had to ask a question that bothered him:
Kolchak: "Doc, what makes you so sure the killer was looking for something that was brought back from the Greend expedition?"
The doctor paused in front of a large wooden door and said to Carl: "Before I can answer that question, you must turn off your tape recorder and promise me to never tell anyone about what you see in this room."
Kolchak: Carl shuts off his recorder. "Sure." He said mildy.
Dr. Lovecraft: "You must swear it!" He took a step toward Carl like a quiet cat, and stared into Kolchak's eyes.
Kolchak: "I do..I swear I will not tell another living soul about what I see in that room!"
Dr. Lovecraft: "Good, I know you will keep your word, that's why I trust you." He keyed the new doorlock, and let Carl enter first, then the doctor switched the lights on.
Kolchak was amazed by all of the weird artifacts of stone carvings, statues, unknown mutations in jars, assorted bladed weapons, and large items covered in black sheets of cloth. Kolchak just had to peek under at least one of the sheets, but he saw Mr. Lovecraft nearing him, and Carl let go of a sheet he almost looked under.
Dr. Lovecraft smiled lightly and said: "No need to hide your curiousity Mr. Kolchak, just ask me if you want to see something." Lovecraft pulled off the black sheet that Carl was trying to peek under.
Kolchak's eyes grew wide with astonishment, and he took a step back to look at what was uncovered and asked: "Is that real?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "Yes, when my father captured it, but it became too dangerous so he had to kill it. A shame really, it's one of the last snow creatures that inhabits Greenland."
The snow creature was eight foot tall, covered in dark brown fur, long arms that reached it's knees, hugh clawed feet, a big mouth full of jagged teeth, with four blood-red eyes, it looked like a demon. The snow creature had been worked on by a professional taxidermist, it looked like it was alive, and was still disturbing to look at.
Kolchak: "Incredible.......I'd be afraid to see it in a zoo."
Dr, Lovecraft: "It's not an animal, he's a YONT-TOTHY, you would know him as a "YETI". He's actually another type of being that exsisted here before Humans, and...he could speak!"
Carl the curious reporter was silent, he heard every word the doctor said, but continued to study the snow being. Lovecraft captured his attention: "Over here Mr. Kolchak, I'll show you what the killer was after", he said loudly. The doctor unlocked a secret panel in the wall, then reached in and grabbed an old book. He showed it to Kolchak and said: "This is what the killer was looking for....the NECRONOMICON!"The doctor explained the dark origin of the NECRONOMICON, and about CTHULU, the astral monster from a parallel universe. Carl was enchanted by the colorful tale relayed from the doctor. Kolchak said he had heard of the NECRONOMICON, but he didn't imagin that he would see an actual copy of it. Dr. Lovecraft further explained that someone had been sneaking in to collect spells, from it's previous hidden location. Lovecraft said he became aware when he found a copied spell from the NECRONOMICON, near it's original hiding place.
Kolchak: "So the killer wantes to steal the book, instead of coping it?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "Yes, so the NECRONOMICON can be used with the statue that was stolen."
Kolchak: "Wait a sec, I thought nothing was taken by the killer?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "The killer took something, I didn't want the police to know about."
Kolchak: "What?"
Dr. Lovecraft "The statue of SHUB-NIGGURATH, the Goat-Mother of Legions. The killer wants to summon her into this world, and impregnate her to build an army of demons, to take over the Earth."
Kolchak: "This Goat-Mother, I take it, she generates children quickly?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "Every time she is impregnated, she spawns a 1000 demon young within a twenty-four hours. The killer must never get a hold of the NECRONOMICON, or the Earth will be overrun with demons within a few months. Because, the spawn of the Goat-Mother impregnate human women, which in turn, generate broods of about hundred from each woman. And the attacks on human women won't stop until their master says to stop breeding, and the master is the one who uses the NECRONOMICON."
Kolchak: "But why would the killer want to destroy the world?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "Only the killer would know that, and I believe the killer is a member of the university staff."
Kolchak: "Do you suspect anyone..." (telephone rings)
Lovecraft put his finger to his lips, Carl became silent, the doctor then picked up the ringing phone and answered: "Hello, this is Dr. Lovecraft's Office, Dr. Lovecraft speaking....... I see, it's for you Mr. Kolchak", said the doctor while handing the telephone to Carl.
Kolchak looked surprized and took the phone call: "This is Carl Kolchak...hey Vincenzo, you old bloodhound, how did you find me? What.....why.....but.....ok.....ok I will. Sorry doc, I've got to go back to Chicago immediately."
Dr.Lovecraft: "But, I need you to help me stop a madman from destroying the Earth", he said intensely.
Kolchak stated sheepishly: "Well....my editor will bring about the end of the world if I don't go back." He sighed, and looked at the floor on his way out. Carl's mind was racing with thoughts of the end of the world, the Goat Mother, Dr. Lovecraft, and the murderer that's still at large.

[glow=green,2,300]Chapter Three: RETURN to CHIGAGO[/glow] Carl Kolchak made it back to Chicago, Illinois, he was unhappy and fatigued from the airline flight. His boss Tony Vincenzo, the editor of the INDEPENDENT NEWS SERVICE, was waiting for Carl in his office. Kolchak walked in Mr. Vincenzo's office pretending to be happy, because he had a feeling that Tony was upset with him about something. Kolchak approached Tony smiling and said: "Hey Tony, you're looking well."
Tony was middle-aged, with black slick-back hair and over-weight because of a bad diet of spicey dinners and fast food. He currently had a look of bitter digust and answered: "I feel miserable, I've got heartburn from a deli sandwich."
Kolchak pretended to be helpful: "Take a stomach pill, and you'll feel great!"
Vincenzo: "Ok, enough about me, Carl, you've got some nerve coming back here expecting me to be buddy-buddy with you."
Kolchak: "I could run down to the mini-store and buy you some headache pills."
Vincenzo: "Enough with the medical advice! I wanted you back here because I've been recieving phone calls about you harrassing the staff at Miskatonic University. And you were also bothering a certain Detective Starbyst with his murder investigation, again! I warned you Carl about getting in people's way, especially POLICE BUSINESS!"
Kolchak was about o speak, but Tony thrust his hand up in front of Carl's face and yelled: "Don't deny it!" Vincenzo puts his hand down and eases up a little: "Now listen Carl, you're off the Miskatonic murder assignment, and I'm going to give you an easy quiet job, so you'll be out of eveybodies way. I'm assigning you the "Ask Miss Emily Column", you'll takeover for her answering her mail, until she gets back from her Rome, Italy vacation."
Kochak tried one last time to tell Tony about what's happening at Miskatonic University: "Tony, what if I told you that the Miskatonic killer is trying to bring about the end of the world, and the only thing stopping him is..."
Vincenzo finished: "..is if you don't get out of my office right now, I'm going to THROW YOU OUT OF THE WINDOW ONTO THE TRACKS OUTSIDE!"
Tony was refering to the Chicago Trasit System, the train goes right by the I.N.S. office floor, every few hours, and if you don't get used to the building shaking and noise, you'd go mad. But Vincenzo was also thinking about Kolchak being run over by a train, in a cartoonish way. Carl was already at Miss Emily's desk, going through a pile of letters, trying to find any interesting stories to write about, for the "Ask Miss Emily Column."
Vincenzo walked out of his office with his hand on his tummy, and approached Kolchak at Miss Emily's desk and said: "Hey Carl, I'm gonig out for a few hours, if anyone is looking for me, tell them I be back at 8:30."
Kolchak: "Sure Tony" he said nicely. And as soon as Vincenzo was out of sight, Carl stop pretending to look busy at Emily's desk. He figured if the "END of the WORLD" was really going to happen, why waste the final hours of life with trivialities. Kolchak put his feet on the desk and relaxed, his closed eyes made him day-dream about the CTHULU adventure he was pulled away from. He thought: "Hmm, I don't remember bothering anyone, but the detective, maybe ol' Starbyst made those calls.....doesn't seem likely, he's a good man, grumpy, but a good man. That just leaves the staff, maybe one of the men who went on the expedition got wise about the statue. Hmmm, maybe Professor Wesireal, nah, he's pushing ninety, it can't be Lovecraft, maybe Miss Honey, she's the only one I haven't met. Hmmm, she was the first to see the body of Miss Samuels, what if her story about her returning for her car keys, was a lie, to cover up her tracks. Hmmm."Within the hour, Carl Kolchak narrowed his mental list of murder/sorcerer suspect choices down to, Miss Honey, and the Greendland Expedition team. Carl was little mad at himself for not spending enough time interviewing the Expedition team of scientists. But how would he know some nut wanted use a powerful astral being to create an army of demons to take over the world. That really worried Kolchak, he was mentally split down the middle about the whole problem. He felt compelled to help the doctor stop a killer, but he had small doubts that Lovecraft's story was true about the Goat Mother.
It had been two years since Kolchak had an interesting and bizarre story to cover, he had been craving for an exciting adventure, he loved being a hero. He chuckled, thinking about himself included in history as a great man among the many real life heros. Especially those who fought bravely and courageously with a sword, and those who weilded the mighty PEN, ah, those blessed writers of non-fiction and fiction. Carl always wanted to be a writer of novels, rather than a columnist or journalist, that way he could write about whatever he wanted to.
But now what? He's forced to return to Chicago, and answer letters for the "Ask Miss Emily" column, because someone called Vincenzo lying that Kolchak was harrasing people at Miskatonic University. It would have been fantastic for Carl if he had stayed in Massachusetts, to solve the murder mystery, and save the day. Dr. Lovecraft will probably be the hero, by finding the killer, and stopping the coming of the Goat Mother. Meanwhile ol' Carl Kolchak will be working as a newspaper reporter, covering the same old every day typical dull assignments.
Kolchak thought to himself, "Well....I guess it wasn't meant to be my latest adventure, so I might as well forget about it." He was still kicked back in the chair, with his feet up and his eyes closed, he blew out a blast of air out of his nostrils, sighing. Then he smiled tamely, and uttered the name......."CTHULU."
A voice from Carl's right replied: "Cthulu, the extra-dimensional monster who dictated the Necronomicon the Abdul Alhazred?" Carl's eyes opened and looked to the right, and saw his co-worker and fellow news reporter, Ron Updyke. They weren't really friends, because Ron thinks Kolchak is eccentric, Kolchak thinks Ron is too sarcastic.
Kolchak: "Yep, that's the guy. How do you know about him?"
Updyke: "College, I was forced to study demonology for my fiction writing and journalism classes." Said the thin, freckle-faced with moustache, a dark suit and wearing a nice tie the his mother gave him.
Kolchak: "Say Ron, have you ever heard of a creature called SHUB-NIGGURATH?"
Updyke: "Shub-Niggurath, the she-goat of a thousand young, a little bit, why?"
Kolchak: "I was wondering if you could tell me everything about this she-goat."
Updyke made a sour face, and said: "I'm busy Carl, I've got.....hey, you've working on the "Ask Miss Emily" column, I wanted to do that!" He said while studing the pile of letters on Emily's desk, where Kolchak was sitting next to.
Kolchak saw an opportunity: "Updike, ol' buddy, how about I let you answer some letters, and you tell me about the goat?"
Updyke: "I culd just give you my demonology books, they're just collecting dust anyways."
Kolchak: "You're a real pal, and since you're giving me all of your books, I'll be fair, and give all of Miss Emily's letters to answer."
Updyke looked at Carl and then looked at the pile of unopened letters on the desk, and said: "Ok, but you'll have to finish my assignment story about the closing of the old rundown Dragonlitz Theater."
Kolchak: "Deal! But, don't tell Tony about our little arrangement, he wouldn't understand that you're more qualified for the Miss Emily column, then I would be."
Updyke: "It'll be our little secret." He said smiling and got right to work and began to whistle.
Kolchak: "I'll do your assignment right now, and if Tony comes back, tell him I took my work home with me. Oh, ah, keep the letters hidden, stuff them in your desk or something."
Updyke: "Sure and thanks Carl, ya know, we're usually sarcastic with each other, but we can work together when we need to." He said honestly.
Kolchak: "I was just thinking the same thing pal. Well, I'm off to the theater." He twirled his lucky hat, popped it on his head and left.Moments later, Carl was driving his 9 year old Ford Mustang to the closed, rundown but iconic Dragonlitz Theater, to write the interest story about it for his newspaper. As a favor for Ron, his co-worker, and sometimes friend, Kolchak agreed to take some pictures of the old cinema, and write the column for it, an easy assignment. Carl was feeling relaxed, and he began to forget about the Miskatonic murder case, and he thought about Updike answering silly letters pertaining to miniscule problems. He did worry about his boss Tony Vincenzo, who eats such spicey and rich food, then suffers with indigestion from the intake of it.
It was dark outside by the time Kolchak had reached the Dragonlitz Theater, he parked right in front of the old cinema's ticket-booth. Updike had called ahead to tell the caretaker of the theater that Carl was on his way over to take pictures for the INDEPENDANT NEWS SERVICE.
A pair of red eyes watched Carl from a building's roof across the street, and watched Kolchak as he was let in by the caretaker. A shadowy being had been following Carl, by flying with it's bat-like wings and keeping to the darken areas of the gothic old Chicago buildings. The observing creature leaped and glided across the street with its fleshy wings to the theater roof top, then the beast peered through the skylight windows looking for Kolchak. It's scanning gaze spotted Carl, it narrowed it's eyes, and chose when to attack the veteren news reporter. Meanwhile, Kolchak was snapping pictures of the interior of the Dragonlitz Theater, Carl thought it was shame to tear down this beautiful and gothic looking iconic cinema.
Suddenly, a loud crash from above, made Carl instinctively head for cover, large shards of glass fell from a now broken skylight window. And a second later, a black beast landed with a loud thump onto the floor, Kolchak and the creature locked eyes with each other. Carl stared at the shiney black-bodied, two-foot spiraled horned, red-eyed, with bat-wings, muscular but thinly built GOAT-MAN! He was naked and had human-like legs, not cloven hooved or animal shaped legs, the beast curled it's lip and spoke! It said in a clear, but fierce voice: "KOL-CHAK!"
Kolchak was more curious then afraid, replied: "Yes...who are you?"
Goat-man: "I am the one who seeks the NECRONOMICON. Give it to me NOW!"
Kolchak: "I don't have it, Mr. Lov..."
Goat-man: "Lovecraft doesn't have it, he said he gave it to you!"
Kolchak: "No, I don't..."
Goat-man: "LIAR!" It stalked toward Carl.
Kolchak: "Wait..wait, I swear I don't have it, let me call Lovecraft and you can talk to him!"
Goat-man: "Liar." It was now five feet from Carl.
Just then, the caretaker entered the scene with a loaded 38 caliber pistol, he saw the Goat-man, and thought it was a costume. He yelled to the intruder: "HEY YOU, hold it, don't move!"
The black goat creature turned his attention to the armed theater caretaker, and said: "Go away, or die!"
Caretaker: "I've got a gun, Carl call the police! And you freak, can take off that mask and give yourself up!"
The black Goat moved fearlessly toward the caretaker, another warning was given to the creature: "Hey pal, I don't want to shoot you, but I will, now GET BACK!" The Goat reached out at the armed man, and the caretaker's revolver fired, the shot didn't even slow down the monster's approach. The caretaker walked backwards and emptied the remaining bullets at point-blank range into the black beast.
Goat-man: "Damned nuisance!" It said and grabbed the man by the neck, and crushed the life out of him in seconds, then let his dead body fall to the floor. Kolchak was frozen watching everythng in shock and awe, but Carl's lips broke the silence.
Kolchak: "You killed Miss Samuels at Miskatonic University, didn't you?" He asked, because he had to know.
Goat-man: "Yes, she saw me, too bad, she was a good teacher. Now...then..." It said turning to face Carl. "Give me the NECRONOMICON....NOW!"
Kolchak: "I swear, I don't have it, let me contact Dr. Lovecraft, and find out for you."
Goatman: "I had a talk with Lovecraft, he said, YOU have it."
Kolchak: "You killed Dr. Lovecraft?"
Goat-man: "No, I may still need him. And it seems I still need you! I'll make a deal with you Kolchak, get the book, or find out where it is, and meet me on the roof of the John Hancock building at midnight, three nights from now. I will let you live if you help me, but, if you try to decieve me, I'll kill you. Well...are you ready to make a deal with the devil?" he said smiling, showing his white flat teeth.
Kolchak: "I'll do what you ask, so you'll spare my meager life."
Goat-man: "Good..." He said slowly, and stepped close to Carl. Kolchak swallowed nervously, but didn't panic. The beast reached for Carl's tie, and straightened it gently, and said: "Be sure to meet me atop the Hancock building in three nights, or I'll have to find you, and do something horrible to you, ok?" He said with a pleasent face.
Kolchak: "Y..yes sir." Carl said nodding, but he was glad the creature didn't harm him, only fixed his tie.
Goat-man: "I like you Kolchak, don't fail me." After saying that, the black beast spread it's wings, and with a single flap, it flew out the large broken skylight.

[glow=green,2,300]Chapter Four: At the EDGE of HELL[/glow] After the sobering experiance of meeting a goat creature, Kolchak took Dr. Lovecraft's warning very seriously, because now Carl knew he was telling the truth. Carl knew he had to become involved, because time was short and no one would believe the incredible story relayed by the doctor. It had been a few hours after Carl had spoken to the police about the caretakers death, and only a few minutes on the telephone, to find out Dr. Lovecraft was recovering in a hospital after HE encountered the goat-man. Kolchak acted quickly, first he convinced Vincenzo his editor that he needed to take some time off for personal undisclosed business reasons. Then he booked a flight from Ohare Airport to Massachusetts, while sitting in the jet, Kolchak thought about Lovecraft not wanting to discuss what to do about thier problem on the phone. Perhaps, the doctor's paranoia had substance, after all, the mysterious goat-man seem to know quite a bit, someone might be spying for the beast.
The jet Carl flew in was nearly empty, and that was fine with Kolchak, he needed the quiet time to record his thoughts on his tape recorder. He pushed down the record button, and spoke into the built-in microphone:
"It's April 15th, the time is 10:44 AM, I've just left Ohare Airport near Chicago and I'm on my way to Massachusetts, my destination, Arkham Hospital/Asylum. The reason, to visit a doctor who had been attacked by a goat-man who is searching for an evil spell book, so he can rule the world. It may seem like a far-fetched adventure, but I met the goat-man, and he is REAL! My discription of the creature, is a followed: he stands about 6 feet tall, he had shiny black fur, blood red eyes, a pair of bat-like wings adorned his back, a pair of long horns on his head, he is incredibly strong, he can fly, and....he can talk!
As a matter of fact, I made a deal with this devil, in exchange for my life, I told him I'd help him find, the NECRONOMICON, an evil and ancient book of sorcery, he gave me three days to find out the books whereabouts. I lied to him. I instead am going to help my friend Dr. Lovecraft, to stop this goat beast from his plan of dominating the Earth. You see, the goat-man, wants to summon a being called Shub-Niggurath, the Goat-Mother of Legions, who can spawn thousands of demon children until they over-run the planet. But, he can do nothing until he obtains the NECRONOMICON, which I hope never falls into his hands.
On a personal note, I haven't had a dangerous supernatural adventure in two years. I was getting lax in my work, and took my job for granted. But now, I've got my serious "thinking cap" on, and I'm feeling valiant, just like I used too when I was on a strange and bizarre assignment. It's a great feeling, I'm like a tiger after it's prey, so watch goat-man, CAUSE KOLCHAK IS COMING BACK!"At 3:48 PM Kolchak arrived at Massachusetts Airport, then drove a rental car to Arkham Hospital/Asylum where Dr. Lovecraft was recovering on the eleventh floor, in room 86. Carl entered the room and saw Professor Wesireal sitting next to Lovecraft who was in pretty bad shape, but conscience, Prof. Wesireal turned to Carl: "Mr. Kolchak, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in Chicago?"
Kolchak: "Well, I came to visit the doc, I heard he was in an accident, and I wanted to see him."
Prof. Wesireal: "Ah, it's nice to see you're concerned about our mutual friend, oh, and it's also a pleasure to see you again Mr. Kolchak."
Kolchak: "Likewise doc."
Prof. Wesireal: "It's Professor, please." He said correcting Carl.
Kolchak: "Oh course Professor Wesireal, my misake. Could you do me a favor and wait outside while I speak to Dr. Lovecraft in private?"
Prof. Wesireal: "If Dr. Lovecraft is in trouble, I'd like to help. He looked at Lovecraft and asked: "Please Dr. Lovecraft, I want to help you!"
Lovecraft nodded an affirmation, then gestured for Kolchak to come close and listen, he spoke in a voice that was just above a whisper: "Carl, don't put the Professor in danger, tell him to wait at his home for you tomorrow. Then go to Miskatonic University, you'll find the book hidden inside the yeti, I showed you the other day. Look in the yeti's back, it should be there. The key to open the storage room, is in a jar on the bookshelf, in my office. Be sure to burn the book, every page...... every page.." he coughed and said: "That's it."
Kolchak stood erect and looked at the Professor and said: "Prof. Wesireal, I need you to wait for me at your home, I should be there tomorrow, I'll call you first."
Prof. Wesireal: "Alright." He said and walked over to the sleepy-eyed doctor: "Take care and get better, We'll find the one who did this to you, I promise!" He waved at Carl, while making a pleasent face: "I'll see you later Mr. Kolchak." And then left.
Lovecraft grabbed Carl's hand, Kolchak looked at the doctor, and moved in close to hear him speak: "Carl, wait until the Prof. has left completely, then go to the university and destroy the NECRONOMICON!"
Kolchak: "What about the Goat-Man?"
Dr. Lovecraft: "I don't no where he came from, but he knows about the book. I'm sorry I sent him to you, I had hoped he wouldn't find you in Chicago, so I would have time to destroy the NECRONOMICON myself. Unfortunately, I am unable to leave Arkham Hospital for a week, therefore, you must destroy the NECRONOMICON yourself."
Kolchak: "Yeah, but, I think the goat-man would be very upset that I did that, and kill me."
Dr. Lovecraft: "You could use a spell from the book, and send him into limbo, it's a place between dimensions, where he could never escape from. That spell is on the forth to the last page, it's called "Nexcus Daemonos". Tear out the page, and throw it in front of him on the floor, and say EVACTUS DAEMOS, and he'll be gone. Now hurry Carl, go now!"
Kolchak: "I'm going, but if for some reason, I don't see you again, It's been great knowing you doc!" He said with a smile.
Dr. Lovecraft: "Likewise Mr. Kolchak, good luck, the world is dependng on you."Carl left quickly in his rental car, he drove fast and even went through a few stop signs. Just as he was half way to Miskatonic University, he blew a red light and nearly crashed into an unmarked police car. After both vehicles came to a screaming halt, Carl locked eyes with the occupent of the unmarked squad car, and recognized the driver, it was Detective Starbyst, Carl had a sinking feeling as the detective steped out of his car, and yelled at the newspaper reporter.
Det. Starbyst: "YOU!" He said and slammed his car door, then continued to speak loudly at Carl: Now I've got a good reason to lock you up in slammer (jail) Kolchak!"
Kolchak evacuated his rental car and said: "WAIT, wait! I know who the killer of Miss Samuels is, and he might be at the university right now!"
Det. Starbyst: "Might be? The judge is going to.."
Kolchak: "Hold on, the killer tried to murder Dr. Lovecraft and myself recently! I saw the killer!
Det. Starbyst: "Yeah...well whats he look like?" He stared hard at Carl.
Kolchak: "He's...he's a...he..he wears a black goat costume to scare you, and he's really strong!"
Det. Starbyst laughs and pats Carl on the shoulder: "Ha ha ha, that's a good one. Now get in my car Kolchak!
Kolchak: "Now wait a sec, I know it's hard to believe, but It's the truth, that's why I couldn't call the police, because I knew they wouldn't believe me." He looked sincere and intense.
Starbyst studied Carl's face and replied: "I remember that look you make when when you're hot on the trail of something."
Kolchak: "Sir, I beg you, you have got to believe me, if we don't stop him now, more people are going to die!"
The detective paused for a moment: " Ok Carl, but if you're lying to me.."
Kolchak answered quickly: "If I'm lying, you can book me on any charge you like!"
Det. Starbyst: "Deal! We'll take my car, I can drive faster than you, so go ahead and park yours."

[glow=green,2,300]Chapter Five: The GOAT MOTHER: SPAWN of CTHULU[/glow] Moments later, Detective Starbyst and news reporter Carl Kolchak raced to Miskatonic University with the police siren blasting, and upon arriving, they both hurried inside the research building. Carl told Starbyst that he had to go to Dr. Lovecraft's office first to get the key, so he could unlock the door to the storage facility. Kolchak also explained to the detective, that he had promised Lovecraft, that no one could enter this private room, except those the doctor gave permission to.
Reluctantly, Det. Starbyst waited outside the storage room, after Carl got the key from the office to enter into the secretive room. Once inside, Carl immediately began to rip apart the back of the stuffed yeti-creature for the hidden book, meanwhile outdie the room, Starbyst noticed himself in a reflection of a metal plaque on the wall, so he combed his hair and fixed his tie. The detective's sharp ears heard someone walking barefoot toward him, he turned to look down the corridor, he saw a dark figure moving in the dimly lit hallway. He could make out, that this person had wings and horns? The costumed nut he thought, it's him, Kolchak was right! He remembered Carl said this guy is strong too, so Starbyst too off his suit coat, and hung it on a door nob, then he stood in the middle of the corridor. It had been a while since he had a good bare-knuckle fight, but wisdom told him to use his gun first. Now the goat-man was twenty feet away, visible, and spoke first.
Goat-man: "Hello Det. Starbyst, please move out of my way, or I might hurt you."
Det. Starbyst: "Try me." He said and pulled out his 357. magnum. "Now put your hands on your head, face the wall and spread your feet apart."
The goat-man smiled and said: "Sorry, but no. I'm afraid you'll just have to shoot me."
Det. Starbyst: "Don't tempt me farm animal. Now put your.." The black goat kept moving toward him, the detective didn't expect him to do that, so he decided to wound him in the leg. He fired his magum at the suspect's leg, but the shot didn't even slow the goat's approach. Starbyst fired more rounds and then the suspect rushed at him. The detective's reflexes were quick, and Starbyst charged as well, his boxing experiance from the military came into play, as Starbyst struck with a powerful right and left cross, then a solid punch to the gut. The black goat wasn't hurt, but annoyed, he struck back at Starbyst, with a punch to the detective's face, stunning him. The the goat lifted the 250 plus pound detective, and threw him into the far wall, Starbyst struck his head hard and was knocked unconscience.
Meanwhile, Kolchak had finally gotten the NECRONOMICON out of the stuffed snow creature, his fingers were trembling as he held the book. But before Carl could reach for a book of matches that was in his pocket, he saw the goat-man standing in the doorway, Kolchak's skin crawled as Carl stood staring at the winged menace.
Goat-man: "I knew you'd be somewhere in the university, and I knew Lovecraft would tell you where the NECRONOMICON is, so I just waited until you got it. Now hand it over to me, Mr. Kolchak!"
Kolchak: "Sure, ah, aren't you afraid of catching cold, cause you don't wear clothes?"
Goat-man: "Heh heh, no." Suddenly Carl dropped the book on the floor, the black goat flinched foward, a reflex to catch the falling book. "Careful with that book Carl, it's over 300 years old!"
Kolchak: "Sorry, I got it." Carl was standing behind a four foot crate, and he dropped the book on purpose, so he could tear out the page that had the "Limbo" spell on it, he got it, but he had trouble remembering the words for the spell to work, he had to stall. "I was wondering what your name is? I mean, you know my name and I.."
Goat-man: "You can call me master. Now give me the book Kolchak!"
Hesitantly, Carl gave up the book, then he noticed a ring on the creatures's finger as the goat reached to recieve the NECRONOMICON, and recognized it! "I know who you are." Said Carl cautiously.
Goat-man: "Oh?" He said now holding the book, and raised an eyebrow at Carl.
Kolchak: "You're...Professor Wesireal."
The black furred fiend paused and answered: "Yes, I am."
Kolchak: "How did you...how?" The goat finished Carl's question.
Goat-man: "...become a goat, simple, magic! I'll show you." He set down the book and raised his arms and wings up, then folded his fleshy wings around himself. He became blurry to look at, then he lowered his arms, he looked like a younger version of Prof. Wesireal wearing a black robe.
Kolchak: "That's amazing, you even look younger than ninety!"
Prof. Wesireal: "With Cthulu to help me, I am 50 years younger, I could do the same for you, if you worship me. You see, I've always wanted to be a king and immortal, the sorcery of the NECRONOMICOM made my dreams possible." The Professor picked up the book and continued to speak in a happy tone. "Come with me Mr. Kolchak, and I'll show you something wonderful."Carl and Wesireal walked into the main library, it was a gigantic room filled with large tables enough for hundreds of students. Every inch of wall space was packed with books of the shelves about everything you could imagine. Massive book cases in rows twenty were also stuffed with every thing from fiction to non-fiction, and all in between. The four upper floors were consisted of three floors not unlike the ground floor, the top fouth floor was utilized as private study rooms and private offices.
Prof. Wesireal had one of the oldest offices for his own, the Professor was delighted to see Carl admiring the solid wood furnishings and highly detailed craftmanship of the university's main library. Kolchak was directed into the professor's fouth floor office, the was filled with beautiful antique furnishings, some were imported, others were custom made centuries ago. Wesireal stopped by a big bookcase next to Carl and made magician-like gestures to get Carl's attention then the professor pressed a secret button. The large bookcase opened like a door, Wesireal said: "LUCE IGNITUS" and row of torches became lit with fire. They were attached to the wall, spaced thirty feet apart from each other, and spiraled downward along a stone staircase. "After you, Mr. Kolchak." He said, and Carl tread on for a mile until they were both in a chamber that was filled with horrible demonic artwork of tapestries, statues and magic symbols everywhere.
Kolchak noticed a wall hanging tapestry in particular, next to the three foot head bust statue of Shub-Niggurath, he remembered Dr. Lovecraft showed Carl a picture of the statue in the NECRONOMICON. He approached the hanging picture and asked: "Is that the Goat Mother?"
Prof. Wesireal: "Isn't she lovely."
Kolchak looked at the beautiful dark skinned woman wearing only a smile, standing in front of a gloomy looking forest, and staring with yellow animal-shaped eyes. Carl spoke: "She could pass for a human, if she didn't have goat's eyes."
Prof. Wesireal: "Certainly, but, when she is in her TRUE form, she looks like a large four-legged goat with tentacles on her back, and..she's always hungry...heh heh heh heh."
If anyone who is reading this story right now, can imagine a sinister happy laugh that creeps you out, well, the twisted professor in the story is enjoying the last hours of Earth, and loving it. Feel free to stop reading right now, because....the world is about to end.
Prof. Wesireal: "You know what mysterious thing that I like about my lover, no one....knows how old she is, she could thousands of years old from some deep part of space. And now, she's here, waiting to enter into our world, and be my wife. Doesn't that just thrill you Mr. Kolchak. And you can be my best man!
Sir, I have to tell you honestly, I've followed your adventures through newspaper clippings that I have collected from all around the USA. Ever since you killed that vampire in Las Vegas, Nevada, your life has never been the same. Carl, you're just like me, I've seen astral monsters and hellish creatures that would make you vomit, from their stench and their appearence. Don't you see, we can join forces, you could be my high council man or secret "Blood Elder", er something."
Kolchak: "I could be your personal barber and trim your goa-tee, while I keep the stove hot and cook all day for the misses."
The Professor's face contorted into dead-like stone look, as if he froze with an emotionless appearence. He spoke with a rising anger in his voice: "Are you making fun of my beliefs Mr. Kolchak?"
Kolchak: "No sir, I'm just overwhelmed by your generous offer, and I was merely being humorously optimistic to ease the tension of the excitement. You're about to become a father of a mighty big family of monsters. Congradulations to you and the lucky bride."
Prof. Wesireal: Spoke like he was giving a lecture."You know Mr. Kolchak, I lived over 3400 years, and I know when I hear sarcasm, but, since your my idol, I'm going to cut you deal."
Kolchak: "Who are you?" He asked unafraid.
The Professor decided to tell him, it wasn't easy: "I have lived a strange life, monks taught me the black arts of magic for a 1000 years, I've waged wars on this planet for another 1000 years. And then, I searched for the NECRONOMICON for over 1400 years, I've only just started reading the book months ago. I found it in Dr. Lovecraft's office one day that he forgot to lock the door." He pulled a foot long dagger out of his sleeve by the hilt, and stared into Carl's eyes, pleasently. "Now, I'm going to ask you one final time, and I expect to hear a serious answer. Are you going to join me, or are you going to be forever resting in peace?" He was using the dagger to pick at his finger nails, while he waited for Carl to answer.Kolchak: "I just have one last question, then I'll give you my decision.
The young looking professor smiled and said: "Go ahead and ask."
Kolchak was looking at the NECRONOMICON that wasn't too far from himself, then looked at the professor and said: "I was wondering how do you change into that fantastic goat form?"
Prof. Wesireal: "Easy." He said while pulling out a parchment from his robe, then he held up the paper. "I just read this written spell I got from the monks, and POOF! I'm a powerful winged goat. Now then, what did you decide to do."
Kolchak: "I want to...HEY THE STATUE IS FALLING!" He yelled and rushed the professor as soon as he turned his head.
Both were struggling with the other, the parchment and the dagger fell onto the floor, both were after the dagger. Carl knew he had a better chance fighting against the professor when he wasn't in his goat form. Kolchak had the dagger, but it was knocked out of his hand, now both grabbed at the parchment. Carl tore a piece off while holding on to the paper, Wesireal had enough of the complicated spell to read and change into his animaliod form.
The professor rose from the floor as the black goat-man, he was furious, and vented his anger in his voice: "That was real foolish Mr. Kolchak, now..DIE!" He flew at Carl, but Kolchak rolled on the ground as the beast passed over him, Wesireal landed on his feet and spun around, then dashed at Carl. Kolchak scrambled to his feet and headed for the staircase to escape, just then the goat-man was struck by a large metal ball. The force of the impact sent him flying into the far wall of the chamber. The slightly dazed Wesireal focused his eyes on Starbyst walking toward him, while the detective continued to spin the flail over his own head, like cowboy with a lasso. Starbyst wanted to strike the goat-man in the head, but Carl changed his mind by yelling: "Hit the statue, the statue, QUICK!" The detective directed his next blow at the SHUB-NIGGURATH stone bust, the bowling ball-sized metal flail ball smashed the three foot statue into chunks of rock. Professor Wesireal as the black goat creature, was in shock by the destroyed stone effigy, he ran to it in disbelief and said: "Why did you do that?"
It was at that time Kolchak pulled the torn spell page from the NECRONOMICON out of his pocket, then he threw it next to the shapeshifted professor. And Carl shouted the ancient words: "EVACTUS DAEMOS!" A sudden fierce wind blasted into the room, then a swirling vertical vortex opened, and a bolt of green lightning shot out and hit the fiendish goat. Wesireal returned to his young human body form, and he was grabbed by spiney tentacles that reached out of the vortex. The 12 inch thick tentacles coiled around his body like constricting snakes, Wesireal had a frightened look of complete terror. His black hair turned bright white, his eyes bulged and ran with tears, his silence became whimpering.
Kolchak and Starbyst peered into the swirling vertical vortex, they could see a black silhouette of a woman with two bright yellow fluorescent eyes looking at them, and blinking. She raised her left arm, and slowly thrust it through the vortex, Starbyst and Kolchak watched her arm enter into their world. It was over seven feet long, and covered in white bushy fur, her elongated fingers grabbed the professor by his head. The she slowly pulled him into the vortex, until he vanished into it. SHUB-NIGGURATH then proceeded to push her head through the vortex, she peered into the chamber room. Her head was hugh, white and woolly, she had seven horns and seven eyes, she scanned the room and noticed the broken statue of her on the floor. Her quiet demeanor became not unlike a rabid dog, her eyes gazed at Det. Starbyst, and she let out a deafening scream of bloody horror. The she-goat ceased her cry of anguish, then fixed her glare at Kolchak and snarled at him, as thick saliva dripped onto the stoney floor. Starbyst and Kolchak continued to stare in utter amazement, she bleated out an sheep-sounding noise, and recoiled back into her realm. The spinning vortex turned into steam, and dissipated into nothingness, the dumb-founded detective spoke first: "Was...that the devil?" His heart was pounding.
Kolchak: "No, that was Shub-Niggurath, the Goat Mother of Legions, and spawn of CTHULU."
Det. Starbyst: "Who...what?" He said calming down.
Kolchak: "Let's find a couple of chairs, coffee, and I'll tell you the whole story."
Within an hour and four cups of coffee between them, the detective knew the entire disturbing tale. Starbyst had a new perspective on life, and also a great respect for Kolchak. He let him know and said: "You know something Carl, I've been a cop for ten years and a detective for fifteen. I've experianced just about everything, but, when that Goat Mother looked at me, I thought the devil was going to take me away. She made me realize that there's still so much to be discoved between Heaven and Earth, and truth really is stranger than fiction. And as for you Carl, you just want the world to be aware that there's more then just humans exsisting in this universe. There are creatures and beings that are good, bad, and some in between. You're quite a guy Kolchak, and I want to apologize for all the rotton things I've said to you in the past. You're a hell of a newspaper reporter, and a hero." The detective put out his hand for Carl to shake it, and Kolchak did.
Det. Starbyst: "If there's anything I could do for you, to make-up for all of the times I lost my temper with you, just name it."
Kolchak: "There's one small thing you could do for me. Would you call my editor in Chicago, and tell him I haven't been harrassing people here. You see the professor made a bunch of fictitious phone calls about me over the phone."
Det. Starbyst: "Consider it done. Anything else?"
Kolchak: "How about dinner?"
Det. Starbyst: "Sure. Anything else?"
Kolchak: "Dessert?"
Det. Starbyst: "Ha ha ha ha."The End
