This a new programme based on the books by Terry Goodkind. It has a pretty good cast, and the scenery is beautiful.
While the only aspects left from the book are the character's names and main story line, it is a nice enough fantasy story. Which is not something you see usually on telly.
The story is as follows: there is the boundry which separates the lands of magic (the Midlands and Dhara) and the non magic land (Westland). One day, the Mother Confessor crosses the boundry and comes to Westland where she meets Richard (an ordinary man) and Zedd (a wizard who did not use his powers for a very long time). They tell Richard that he is the Seeker of Truth and that with the sword of Truth he must bring peace to the world and destroy the evil forces of Darken Rahl (i.e. the bad one). Now, Darken Rahl wants to open the Old World and bring back the Dark One (an evil spirit) but to do that he needs the instructions that are in the Book Of Counted Shadows. The problem is that there are no known copies of this book left, but as it happens Richard knows the book off by heart as his father made him learn it since he was a child. And that is why Darken Rahl is after Richard too.
I remember when I was reading the first book, I was thinking that it would be nice to have a movie made out of these series. However after book 5, the plot looses its magic, there are too many characters, too many pages of unnecessary information. Goodkind, finished the series two years, making in total 11 books.
The movie is entertaining, and it is not your usual drama.
