Nice, I liked it Did he just say "patterns around the cornflakes?" I quite like prog (mainly Yes ). But as everyone knows, I can't put my finger on what exactly prog is... I know that the songs are generally longer than other rock songs and have more instrumental bits. Then Honey reminded me the other day that prog songs also use classical instruments sometimes. And Kitie said that prog is not commercial (I agree). So is that prog nailed down... or not? I read on youtube once that it's "a way of expressing yourself", but I'm not sure where this is going... (all music is a form of expression, innit?) And would you say that prog has a cetain theme to it, because I don't really see a common theme... if you compare Yes and Pink Floyd for example, they're really, really different... Or is it just a matter of not having "commercial" themes, rather than having a certain theme? Another question: if progressive rock is a type of rock, what is it that makes it rock? That is, what is the "common denomenator" between prog and.... say, the punk rock we have today? Type of beat? I dunno, I'm just confusing myself here...

Yes Octie I see this is going to be a long debate I`ll get back to you on that . Natural Science Put a gun to my head and ask me whats my fav Rush song , i think this is the one . Its prog at its finest , maybe a fast paced rocker but the lyrics and the complex music makes it a brilliant piece of music "Natural Science" [1. Tide Pools] When the ebbing tide retreats Along the rocky shoreline It leaves a trail of tidal pools In a short-lived galaxy Each microcosmic planet A complete society A simple kind mirror To reflect upon our own All the busy little creatures Chasing out their destinies Living in their pools They soon forget about the sea... Wheels within wheels in a spiral array A pattern so grand and complexTime after time we lose sight of the way Our causes can't see their effects [2. Hyperspace] A quantum leap forward In time and in space The universe learned to expand The mess and the magic Triumphant and tragic A mechanized world out of hand Computerized clinic For superior cynics Who dance to a synthetic band In their own image Their world is fashioned No wonder they don't understand [3. Permanent Waves] Science, like nature Must also be tamed With a view towards its preservation Given the same State of integrity It will surely serve us well Art as expression Not as market campaigns Will still capture our imaginations Given the same State of integrity It will surely help us along The most endangered species The honest man Will still survive annihilation Forming a world State of integrity Sensitive, open and strong Wave after wave will flow with the tide And bury the world as it does Tide after tide will flow and recede Leaving life to go on as it was... No cornflakes in the pools of ebb and flow Octie

Nice, I liked it Did he just say "patterns around the cornflakes?" Ha! I can see how you can hear "corn flakes" I know that the songs are generally longer than other rock songs and have more instrumental bits. Then Honey reminded me the other day that prog songs also use classical instruments sometimes. And Kitie said that prog is not commercial (I agree). So is that prog nailed down... or not? I am no pro in this, but i'll have a bash. Prog. Well, if you think of the begining of rock, which i imagine is rock n roll , as in Bill Haley and Elvis, prog rock is more rock than roll... As you said Octie longer, and has long instrumental bits. I sitl think that most prog bands use classical instruments, or at least they use more than the average drum and guitars. A mellotrone is quite common in prog i think. They are not commercial songs, as you say. I mean can you imagine advertising a trip to Australia with And You And I in the background ? I read on youtube once that it's "a way of expressing yourself", but I'm not sure where this is going... (all music is a form of expression, innit?) Hmm, any form of art is a way to express yourself... And would you say that prog has a cetain theme to it, because I don't really see a common theme... if you compare Yes and Pink Floyd for example, they're really, really different... It has a certain theme to it in a sense that its not your average Boy-Meets-Girl [as Kitie says] or the typical Come -On-Baby-Make-Me-Happy [as our mom says ] but its more than that. Still about love and how important that is . Or you can have proggies singing of Nature like Survival, or spiritual themes, or the war or just making a social comment. See, most of the prog songs have a deep meaning to their songs or a stroy behind it.
They have a sort of magical atmosphere to them, or an emotional one... it just mezmerizes you [ooh what a word! its the harry effect ]
Another question: if progressive rock is a type of rock, what is it that makes it rock? That is, what is the "common denomenator" between prog and.... say, the punk rock we have today? Type of beat? I dunno, I'm just confusing myself here... I think it is in the beat, and i find prog less heavy than say, metal rock.... But then again I suppose there can be a spectrum of Prog where you can have the light prog on one side and the heavy prog on the other
Proggies also usually have interesting staging and attire...
And thats my problem with Rush... their lyrics are defenately proggie, but their music... is more heavier than what I think prog is... But then i am a softy, so i suppose Rush are Heavy prog going towards heavy rock? Infact, in most things I saw Rush was always refered to as rock group and not prog....
I suppose proggies is the classic music of today ....

Hmm, I never considered Kate Bush as Prog.. maybe more like slow pop rock? (I just invented a new name!)
Kate Bush always was on another planet (in a good way)

Yea, she has an interesting way of doing her videos. Interesting themes in her songs too, that's why we like her I guess. (And other reasons too )
